The Future is Fashion
A Spring/Summer collection by Isadora Borba for Mugler.
Research focus
Nostalgia or fear of the future?
Fashion is always in motion: old styles come back adapted to the present, influenced by nostalgia, celebrities and social media. Past and innovation keep blending in clothing and aesthetics.
The research started from the relationship between past and future: why is fashion so predictable, given that it is made of human behaviour? From that idea I found articles about “2026 is the new 2016”, a movement that spread through a social media trend at the start of 2026. So I began researching the real intention behind that trend.
Reading and watching posts from the trend, I realised the real reason behind the nostalgia for that time was the simplicity of life back then — how social media, and even smartphones, were used. I came to see that beyond nostalgia, these posts carried a fear of the future: many of them talked precisely about the absence of Artificial Intelligence and of a life reported minute by minute on social media.
Inspiration theme
Streamline Moderne
An architectural style that emerged in the 1930s, in the middle of the Great Depression, and stayed relevant until 1940. An evolution of Art Deco, it is defined by smooth, rounder lines, aerodynamic shapes and an aesthetic that suggests movement and speed.
